The government’s decision – to create a law declaring meter-tampering as a criminal offense.
The government has decided to address the issue of meter-tampering by declaring it a criminal offense under the country’s criminal code. This decision was made in an emergency meeting of the cabinet held at Singha Durbar today. It has been announced that a bill to amend the law will be sent to the legislative committee of the cabinet to complete the process of amending the law.
According to government sources, some provisions of the criminal code, the criminal procedure code, the civil code, and the civil procedure code will be amended to consider tampering with meters as a crime.
A group of people from the Madhes region walked from their district to Kathmandu, claiming that the interest on the loan (meter-reading charges) they had taken from the moneylender in their village was legal and demanding justice. They have been protesting, saying that they have been affected by the recent deaths of some of their members due to the issue.
